Weekend Review

The San Francisco trip and accommodations were great! The 10th anniversary celebration of Kung Fu Qigong magazine was a Blast! Meng Sifu received two awards and he and his students put on the best demonstration, providing real information about Wing Chun. They simultaneously executed the Siu Nim Tau forms of the Ip Man and Hung Fa Yi systems, allowing a comparison of Art and Science. Sifu performed Chi Sau while blindfolded, showing his natural feel and flowing in the close range. However, the highlight of the trip was the seminar conducted by Gee Si Gung at the headquarters school. He lectured and conducted a laboratory on Kiu Sau (Bridge Hand). His comment “They talk I walk. They hit I stick,” came down from Si Jou. We began with Fau Kiu Kiu Sau, which was practiced without concern for body mechanics, then moved on to Kiu Sau while being touched, pushed, grabbed, and hit. The responses to being touched or pushed was to strike with the top of the extended forearm to the opponents elbow, generating the maximum energy and clearing your upper gate and then chopping him with the other hand, then rolling. The response to grabbing was to execute a high Gaam Sau, chop, and roll. The response to a strike was to execute Biu Da and roll. The beauty of Kiu Sau is that if forces an attacker to “earn” their way into your space while giving you time within your space to communicate with them and gain an understanding of their intent prior to executing your offense. If your opponent cannot get past your Kiu Sau they cannot complete their attack. Also if the Kiu Sau is executed correctly there is no need for Chi Sau, you just finish the conflict. The main focus of Kiu Sau is to use your forearms or bridge hand to control the advances of your attacker while putting yourself in a superior position.

Si Gung had Rick lead us through the expression of the Hung Fa Yi formula 1,2,3,5, and 6. This expression identifies the HFY practitioner to the world.

After the Seminar there was a Baai Si ceremony for J.K. Walz. As usual the meaning was clear, “J.K.”, as a disciple, has made a huge step in his Kung Fu life. The Feast that followed was grand.

Thanks to all who helped Jan and I as we went from place to place especially Sifu, Simo, Crystal, Levi, Liza, and “The Marty-Davids”.
