HKB Eng Chun (Black Flag Wingchun) oral history is most closely matched to HFY oral history. The creation of the Wing Chun was due to the invasion and overthrow of the Ming by the Qing in 1644. Ming Loyalists continued to fight but had to eventually relocate to the Southern part of China while the Qing controlled the North of China. For many years, Southern china was known as the ‘Southern Ming Dynasty.’ Also during this time, the Ming Loyalists regrouped and began to formalize plans to fight back against the Qing invasion. There were warriors from the military, the martial arts community, and fighting monks willing to put their lives on the line in support of the Ming Dynasty. One of the strongholds used by these groups was the Southern Shaolin Temple in Fukien Province. The Southern Shaolin Temple became a main base used by members of the Anti-Qing movement. Many warriors including professional soldiers, warrior monks, and civilian martial artists exchanged information and practiced together for the purpose of overthrowing the Qing Dynasty. Through their combined effort they ended up developing a new hybrid system as the essence of all advanced styles. The place they used to discuss the new hybrid system was called Eng Chun Tim (Weng Chun Dim), which meant “Hall of Forever Spring” inside the Southern Shaolin Temple. In joining their efforts, vision and mission, they created a new Shaolin system that is effective, direct, simple, deadly and accelerates the skill of experienced warriors in a short period of time. Their purpose was for the new system to be taught to secret rebellion warriors to overthrow the Qing Dynasty and preserve the depth of wisdom and knowledge within the Shaolin Temples. The nucleus of this new system was based on the “Cap Pwee Lo Han Jiu” (18 Lo Han ‘Open Hand’ [Jiu]) rather than the 18 Lohan Closed Fist[Kun] (Although 18 Lohan Open Hand[Jiu] is part of 18 Lohan Closed Fist[Kun]), a well-known Northern Shaolin system. The Northern and Southern Temples exchanged information throughout the centuries of their existences. The movements of the Northern Shaolin are often longer and bigger than the movements of the Southern Shaolin. Under conditions which required something relatively easy to train and retain, the movements of the 18 Lo Han ‘Open Hand’ were revised for efficiency. This might be the reason why Southern Shaolin’s is most widely known for short bridge hands. Today, due to this factor, the Southern Shaolin families have an identity unique from the North. Before the new hybrid system was finalized and given a name, there were traitors inside or near the Shaolin temple in Fukien and the Qing Dynasty was informed. With a large amount of Qing troops armed with many canons, the Shaolin temple in Fukien was destroyed and burned to the ground. Legends say there were only five survivors, known as the Five Ancestors. These Five Ancestors are praised as the founders of many southern Kungfu styles and many secret societies. It is most likely that the Five Ancestors in the myths of Southern Chinese martial art families represent the five branches of secret societies formed by the survivors of the destruction of the Southern Shaolin Temple. The survivors of the destruction of the Southern Shaolin Temple formed into five branches to preserve the system and continue the fight against the Qing in secret. Some used the name of the hall where the system was developed (Weng Chun Kuen), others modified the name from Weng (everlasting or eternal) to Wing (praise) as a reminder to continue to spread the system and the Anti-Qing message, and others mixed or blended the essence of the new system with other martial art systems to create what are known today as the various Southern Chinese martial art systems. It was also during this time that the phrase of Yim Wing Chun was established to protect the secrecy around the origins of the system. Yim means “to prohibit or to be discreet.” According to Fukien HKB Eng Chun (Black Flag Wing Chun) oral legend: “A mysterious phenomenon happened after the burning of Shaolin temple in Fukien: a mysterious sword came out of the ground where the Shaolin temple used to stand. There were two inscriptions on the body of the sword: “Sang Liong Jo Cu” that means “Two dragons fighting for the pearl.” On the tip of the sword, there were other inscriptions; “Bhiat Ceng Hok Beng” meaning “Overthrow Ceng (Qing), restore Beng (Ming)". These sayings were later adapted by many secret societies as their motto. There are many underground secret societies who claimed their organization was founded by one (or more) of the Five Ancestors. These organizations can be categorized by five different flag colors:
With the destruction of the Southern Shaolin Temple, the different organizations spread to different locations. While all were based on the same origin and intention of overthrowing the Qing, each ‘flag’ was focused in a different way. Development of Wing Chun Kun inside Red Flags Society Group Red flag organizations had a large number of trained troops. Their main objective was to overthrow the Qing with large army attacks. There were many societies belonging to the Red Flag branch such as Hong Boen Hwee (Hung Moon) also known as Ang Hua Hwee(Hung Fa Yi), Ang Hien Hoo, Thian Te Hwee(Tian Di Hui), etc. Wing Chun was taught to its warriors so that they could have advance fighting skills. The development of Wing Chun through "Red Flags society" line evolved over time. The Wing Chun system through this 'Red Flag' group arrived in Guang Dong province through the efforts of at least Cheung Ng, an Opera expert from the North who joined the revolution after the destruction of the Southern Shaolin Temple and eventually rose to a leadership position. He established the King Fa Wui Gun, which set the foundation for a long relationship between Anti-Qing revolutionaries and Cantonese Opera. The King Fa Wui Gun was the ancestor of the Red Boat Opera Troup, to which almost all major lineages of Wing Chun connect. Prior to the Opera society involvement in Wing Chun and anti-Qing activities, someone would have to be connected to the Shaolin community or be connected to Ming military loyalists under the cover of secret society activity. After the collapse of the Red Boat Opera Troup and the ban on Cantonese Opera in 1855, Wing Chun started to filter out to the public. Many famous martial artists established a name for themselves and the Wing Chun system during this timeframe, such as Leung Jan. It was through Leung Jan’s line that Wing Chun spread from a little-known art to gain world-wide attention: Ip Man, a native of Foshan, left China for Hong Kong in 1949. His most famous student was the martial artist and actor, the late Bruce Lee. Development of Wing Chun inside Black flags society group Wing Chun originated from the Southern Shaolin Temple, located in Fukien Province. The people of Fukien speak a dialect of Chinese called Fukienese. ‘Eng Chun Kun’ is the Fukienese pronunciation of Wing Chun Kuen. Most people are more familiar with the phrase Wing Chun, which is the Cantonese dialect. The Black Flag communities had a smaller number of highly trained members. This was due to the main objective of the Black Flag division, which was to train professional assassins to eliminate Qing officials and traitors within the other “Anti Qing” secret societies. With these two primary missions, most of their organizations operated with extreme caution and more secretly than the Red Flags. Because of their extreme secretive identity, not many people in the Black Flag identities were known. One of the societies in Indonesia that originated from the Black Flags Society in China is known as "Seng Ki Hwee". The Seng Ki Hwee society, just like any other society, evolved from its original function and become the society of Chinese immigrant brotherhood in Surabaya-Indonesia. These were the good ones. There were also the bad ones that become a criminal society. In China these groups are known nowadays as Triad (Such as Fang Qing Pang). Among the rebellion organizations (anti Qing and Anti Imperialists) the Black Flag group/division is the least known group due primarily to its internal secrecy and the role which it played among the rebellion organizations. The role of Black Flag group was to terminate / execute Manchu officials, and traitors within the different Flag Groups. Secret among the Black Flag group was tantamount. Normally, individual members did not know one another. Kong Co (Ancestor) [GGGM]. Tjia Fun Jiao was the last known Chief Instructor of the Black Flag group/division. He fled to Indonesia in 1907 and met the GGM. HFM Eng Chun Kun (Black Flag Wing Chun Kuen) system arrived in Indonesia There was a Kungfu master in China named "Tjia Fun Jiao". It was later revealed that he was the last known Chief Instructor of the black flag society in China. During a very chaotic situation where the number of traitors had grown, it was very difficult to identify who was the friend and enemy. Due to one incident in which Tjia Fun Jiao killed one of the government' officials in public, his identity was almost revealed. In order to protect his society, he fled to Indonesia. He had chosen Indonesia because he heard the rumor that one of his cousins had settled down in Indonesia(at Malang city) and had an established kungfu school at Malang city(note: there was no phone technology yet at that time). After KongCo [GGGM] Tjia Fun Jiao arrived at Malang city, he couldn't found his cousin. He had become a homeless person for weeks. During one incident when he was attacked with local native trouble makers, a number of people armed with axes, he took all of them down without injuring any of them. After this, he was found by Sujo [GGM] King Yang. After meeting with KongCo [GGGM] Tjia Fun Jiao, Sujo [GGM] King Yang took him home and took care of him as his own parent for almost two years. For two years, Sujo [GGM] still practiced martial arts while KongCo [GGGM] Tjia lived upstairs. During that two years time, KongCo [GGGM] Tjia was very impressed by Sujo’s [GGM] dedication in practicing Chinese martial arts. In 1909, KongCo [GGGM] also felt that he owed too much of a favor to Sujo [GGM] King Yang and he wanted to repay it by teaching Sujo [GGM] King Yang everything he knew about the Black Flag Engchun system. Because of the secrecy of this system, KongCo [GGGM] intiated GGM into the Black Flag blood ceremony/ritual. He also required Sujo [GGM] King Yang to take a blood oath before His master, Kong Co Tjia. The oath had 3 major points that if it is being broken, blood will come from 7 holes in the head and you would die. Suju King Yang, the 2nd generation lineage holder of the Shaolin Black Flag Engchun, passed away in 1986 at 97 years old and left the precious Shaolin Treasure system to the chosen next successor; Sukong [GM] Tio Tik Kwi. Suhu (instructor) Lin Xiang Fuk (Kenneth Salim) A son of Chinese parents, our instructor, was born in Indonesia. As he's grown up in the Chinese community, he began to learn kuntao/kungfu at the age of 10 and he was and still is one of the 'closed-door' disciples of SuKong [GM] Tio Tik Kwi. He has completed all of his training and has more than 24 years experience in Black Flag Wingchun Kungfu (Hek Ki Boen Eng Chun Pai). Sukong [GM]Tio had given him permission to teach and spread this system. Since 1995, he had assisted Sukong [GM] in teaching Engchun(Wingchun). In 2000, Suhu Lin was appointed as the 4th Generation Black Flag Engchun next successor and lineage holder. Suhu Lin was instructed, by Sukong [GM] Tio, to open his own school. In 2005, Suhu (Master) Lin Xiang Fuk arrived in the USA. He carried the responsibility from the Sukong[GM] and the Sujo [GGM] to preserve this extraordinary art for the next generation..... The well guarded art/treasure... That came originally from Shaolin Temple in Fukien. That contained the essence of many advanced Chinese Martial Arts... That was kept top secret by the Black Flag Secret Society for the last 300 years... Suhu (Master) Lin had opened the door to the American public since 2005. At long last there is now the opportunity to learn and explore the extraordinary practices of Shaolin Fukkien Black Flag Wingchun martial arts that have never been revealed to the West; it is now available for all who have a sincere desire to learn.
