| Meeting with the VTM | ||

During Suhu Lin’s research in his own art, He came across the VTM and noted that HFY system has a similar background and is different from the public Wing Chun. After discussing with Sukong [GM] Tio in Indonesia about the connection between HKB Eng Chun (Black Flag Wingchun) and Hung Fa Yi, the Sukong [GM] had the opportunity to visit the United States in 2008. Suhu Lin took this opportunity to speak with Sukong [GM] Tio about the Ving Tsun Museum, located in Dayton, OH. The Sukong [GM] liked the basic idea of the VTM and wanted to give his support. They planned to visit the VTM before Sukong [GM] Tio returned to Indonesia. After making initial contact with the VTM, Master Benny Meng invited Suhu Lin and Sukong [GM] for an official visit. Informed of the invitation, the Sukong [GM] agreed to the meeting and made the decision to contribute what information he could about the HKB Eng Chun (Black Flag Wingchun) family and background in an effort to support the VTM. The meeting was Friday, November 14th and Saturday, November 15th, 2008. After getting settled at their hotel, they came to the VTM in the early evening. Master Meng presented them with a tour of the VTM and presented souvenirs to commemorate the occasion. After this introduction, the first formal discussion began. During the first night, they discussed history, philosophy, major theories and concepts of their system. Sukong [GM] Tio and Suhu Lin were very open and friendly, willing to discuss any topic about their system. As the night went on, both sides had a lot of smiles on their faces; as we shared information we were happy and surprised to discover that our systems shared many similarities. Both systems point to origins in the Southern Shaolin Temple and secret society backgrounds. Both also have maintained their Chan Buddhist identities. Their core concepts of Heaven, Human, and Earth (Thian Te Jin) and Time, Space, and Energy are also very similar. From the VTM’s perspective, it was good to discover another lineage willing to share their treasures with the Wing Chun community, which contains the principals of Time, Space, and Energy and the concept of Heaven, Human, and Earth(Thian Te Jin). We finished Friday night late and started again early Saturday morning. During Saturday’s discussions, we also experienced hands-on demonstrations. HKB Eng Chun[Black Flag Wingchun] and HFY Wingchun representatives demonstrated, shared, and discussed throughout the day. Suhu Lin and Sukong [GM] Tio left after a late lunch. In a quick summary, HFY and Fukien HKB Eng Chun [Black Flag Wingchun] share more similarities in concepts, principles, philosophies, and spiritual cultivation while having more distinct differences in physical application and expression. Both systems utilize the Law of Time, Space, and Energy. The main reason for the differences based on this initial interview lie in the focus of Fukien HKB Eng Chun [Black Flag Wingchun] on energy factors first whereas HFY places the focus on time and space factors first such as Ying, which is shapes and structures. Energy and Time/Space can be seen as the balance of Yin/Yang. Both systems take their initial area of focus to a very advanced level for inside members before broadening into the other side of balance. Below is the report and conclusions based on information (discussion, lecture, and demonstration) collected through personal interviews and personal interaction by VTM staff, headed by Curator Benny Meng, assisted by Sifu Jeremy Roadruck, Sifu Chango Noaks, and Instructor Zach Remley. return to top Today | Museum Information | Galleries | Reference Library | Community | Gift Shop ©Ving Tsun Museum 1997-2012 All Rights Reserved. last updated : February 13, 2009 at 12:17pm EST |
