| Our Wing Chun Heritage | ||
By John CrescioneWhile watching TV the other night, the announcer said,"...and this is a part of our TV heritage." That got me to thinking about our Wing Chun heritage. I started Wing Chun in the early 70's.The only shows that I recall having any Martial Arts in them on a regular basis was Honey West, starring Anne Francis as a Private Eye who routinely fought the bad guys using Judo flips and karate chops (she also had a cat named Bruce that was a regular on the show. HMMMM!) , The Wild, Wild West, starring Robert Conrad and Ross Martin as 2 spies out in the old west. Conrad would always use kicks, throws and grappling in the fight scenes. In one episode he even had to fight a kung fu guy! And the last of course, was The Green Hornet. Batman and Robin don't count! The 70's were a time of Kung Fu movies at the drive in, Bruce Lee, punching, kicking and sweating and all things Chinese and exotic. It was also the time of insecurities, questions and confusion as to what we were really doing. So after always getting vague, cryptic answers from our sifu, where do you turn to but to books. Many of you who are instructors now may not even be aware of some of these books. Your sifu's or sigung probably do. This is what we grew up on. Read about the first 6 books ever written on Wing Chun.
